I actually reposted the review of McAfee's VirusScan 2007 in the forums, with an update posted on September 13, 2006 at 2:58pm.

Decided to give up on McAfee and switched over to AVG, posted this on their forum

I completely give up, and fed up with this new VirusScanner. I'm sorry but your new program uses too many resources, has an ugly ui that is also confusing, and I got no help from technical support for my problem. As being such a dedicated user since version 3.x I hate to be leaving, but I cannot stand this program anymore, v10 was ok, but 11 crossed the mark.

I decided to take my business to another company, Grisoft, and their free antivirus program. It is basic, simple, easy on the resources, and does its job. Everything I need, and for free as well.

I hope you get your act together, because while you're attempting to attract new customers, you're pushing away your old long-time customers. I am not saying this as an assumption but from what I have been reading on these boards, especially from this topic

http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=84957

I basically came to the conclusion that it was locked due to the negative feedback. Nice to see McAfee locking out topics they don't like. It was honest feedback from customers, but only labeled as flamed.

Anyway, I gave my two cents, and it has been a good (although downhill) 9 years. I wish best to you, and hope that you listen more to the negative feedback.

That is, when I decided to try out different Virus Scanners, mainly the free ones. This is the review I wrote originally on September 13, 2006 at 2:01pm.

Since I first installed McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007, I basically was planning on giving up on McAfee all together since their program has really gone down the drain. You can read the review of it on my first experience in my blog or in the software reviews.

I finally got sick and tired of the resources it was using, the tooltip balloon that kept poping up telling me my firewall is off, and most of all, McAfee completely ignoring my post on how to fix that issue...

Today I decided to try a new anti-virus program and uninstall McAfee. I wasn't even going to bother with Norton because they were just as bad if not worse than McAfee, and I wasn't going to try microsoft because... well... it's microsoft...

So I remember people talking highly of AVG made by GRISOFT. I checked out their awards and the free version. Just be reading the features I have to say that I am impressed because it is truly free, no trial or any crap, and it gives everything you need. So I downloaded it.

While it was downloading I decided to scan my computer with Ad-Aware. You see I gave McAfee the full benefit of the doubt and let them be my spyware protection as well, completely disabling my ad-watch. Sure enough it found something.

It was just one item, but you figure that I have only been using it the new McAfee for a little over a week, what happens to someone that has been using it for a few months. So I re-enabled Ad-watch.

I installed AVG no problem and updated it. After it was fully installed I checked out the resources and it only uses a total of 15 megs between three processes. That is a lot better than McAfee considering the fact that MCShield process would take up atleast 10 megs all the way up to 30+.

There is a little icon that sits in your system tray for easy access to quiting the program, unlike McAfee (you are unable to exit the program at all).

When you double click the icon it brings up the control center.

This isn't like McAfee's Security Center that replaces Windows, this is just a screen to control all the functions of AVG with a simple double click and no fancy GUI. Honestly when it comes to core items like virus scanners, spyware protectors, firewalls, and such, you don't need a detailed resource hogging GUI because these programs aren't meant to be seen by the user every day like a word processor or web browser (unless you are very paranoid or something) so AVG keeps it simple. Another thing I like about the Updates is that it is checked once a day, sure it frees up a little bandwith and resources, but honestly unless you are a corporation, the chances of your computer being infected within 24 hours by a new virus that the definitions havent been installed is very unlikely, in my opinion.

The scan page (test center) is also as basic and gives everything you need for your protection right infront of you. Rescue disks, virus scan scheduling, and even does email scanning.

In conclusion, I am very impressed by this program at first glance, and by everyone speaking so highly about it, I have a feeling that I have found my replacement to McAfee and will also be suggesting this program to my friends.

Just to note though, the free edition is allowed on one computer because it is meant for personal use. Apparently they check the IP when updating and if the same IP address is getting an update it already got then you might get a warning. This might be annoying for people who have many computers behind a router, like me. An article on that is here:
